Breast Augmentation Surgery

A breast augmentation, also known as an augmentation mammoplasty,

is a popular cosmetic procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts. Whether you desire a subtle increase in volume or a more dramatic transformation, Dr. Hill will work closely with you to achieve your desired results. We offer a variety of implant options and techniques to create natural-looking and proportionate breasts. There are many options in breast augmentation surgery, including implant type, implant location, incision location, and implant volume. Dr. Hill's goal is to match his patient's wishes to the best possible outcome. Our consultations are free and focus on providing education to allow our patients to make informed decisions about what is best for them. At Froedtert South Plastic Surgery, a breast augmentation costs $5,950, which includes anesthesia, facility and professional fees, implants, and follow-up care.

Breast Implants

The outer shell of all breast implants is made of silicone. The shell of newer implants is thicker and much more durable compared to implants in the past. This improvement has significantly reduced the risk of implant rupture. The material inside the shell, which provides the volume, is made of silicone or saline.  Silicone implants are the most common type of implant used today for breast augmentations.  Silicone implants have a more natural feel with their consistency matching breast tissue better than saline.  The silicone in the newer generation of implants is cross-linked and, therefore, is no longer is a liquid. This helps to better maintain the implant shape.  Saline implants have a greater tendency to cause a rippling appearance, particularly in thin women.  Additionally, the feel of a saline implant is less natural since saline is more similar to water than breast tissue.  Here at Froedtert South Plastic Surgery, we offer implants produced by MENTOR.

Postoperative Recovery

Every patient recovers from surgery differently. Recovery varies depending on whether the implants are placed below the muscle (submuscular) or above the muscle (subglandular). If the implants are placed below the muscle, it is not uncommon for patients to feel muscle spasms for the first few days to weeks after surgery. This is due to stretching of the muscle to accommodate the implant. Initially, the implants are pulled upward by the muscle. Because of this, patients may feel the Implants are situated high on the chest. Within a few weeks to months after surgery, the implants will settle on the chest, which is commonly referred to as "implant drop" or "fluffing out". In a subglandular augmentation, there is typically less post-operative pain and muscle tightness, initially, and over time there is less settling of the implants. Subglandular augmentation is often used to create a miniature "lift" without the need for the extra incisions and scarring created by a vertical breast lift. Regardless of the type of augmentation, it is important to wear a compressive bra for four to six weeks following surgery. We recommend avoiding lifting over 5-10 lbs for the first week and 10-15 lbs the second and third weeks after surgery. Overhead lifting, in submuscular augmentations, is avoided for six weeks. Light cardio workouts can resume around three weeks after surgery. Patients will be seen for their first follow-up visit within a week of surgery and frequently thereafter throughout the postoperative recovery period.
